Free AI Girlfriend Apps Worth Trying in 2026
Everything in this category is free until it isn't. The useful question is not whether there is a free tier but where its edge sits.

Nearly every AI companion product has a free tier, and almost none of them are free in the same way. Rather than ranking apps, it is more durable to know which four limits to look for, because those are what you will hit and they are rarely on the pricing page in plain form.
Limit one: messages
Some products cap total messages, some cap messages per day, and some use a regenerating allowance that refills slowly. A daily cap is generally kinder than a lifetime one, because it lets a habit form. Check whether the counter resets on a clock or on a rolling window, since the two feel very different in practice.
Limit two: memory
Persistent memory costs money on every single message, so it is the most common thing held back. A free tier with a short context window and no persistence will feel warm for an evening and shallow by the weekend.
Limit three: model quality
Many products quietly route free users to a smaller, cheaper model. The prose gets flatter, replies get shorter, and the character drifts. This is rarely disclosed, but it is easy to detect: the same prompt on the same character will produce noticeably different writing.
Limit four: everything beyond text
Images, voice and calls are almost always metered separately, because each costs far more per use than a text reply. Treat any free allowance of these as a sample rather than a feature.
A sensible way to test
- Use one character for a week rather than ten characters for an hour.
- Note exactly where you hit the first wall, and what it cost to pass it.
- Check whether the paid plan removes the limit or merely raises it.
- Confirm you can cancel and export or delete before you pay anything.
